TAMARAC, Fla. -- Hernan Borja (Jr., Kingwood, Texas) continued to be the Barry University men's golf top performer and finished tied for third as an individual at the NSU Spring Classic hosted by Nova Southeastern at the Woodmont Country Club on Tuesday.
CSU-Bakersfield held on for the tournament championship title. The Roadrunners were the only team to break par with a 287 one-under score in the opening round. They later followed with a 290 in the second round and a 294 in the final round to win the tournament by 37 strokes. Host Nova Southeastern moved up one spot and finished second with a three-round score of 908 (301-310-297), while Florida Atlantic fell back one to finish third with a three-round 913 (303-305-305) score. Eckerd (306-311-303=920) and Saginaw Valley State (306-311-303=920) carded identical three-round 920 scores to finish tied for fourth rounding out the top five teams.
Borja fired an opening round even-par 72 score and finished the first day with a one-over-par 145. In the final round, he carded a three-over-par 75 and finished with a three-round total of 220, good enough for third place out of 59 individuals. Also playing as individuals, Tony Bosken finished seven strokes behind Borja with a three-round 227 (77-69-81) and tied for 11th, while Chris Davis' three-round 234 (79-79-76) score spotted him in a tie at 24. Matt Jonah (77-79-79=235) and Preston Roberts (84-81-78=243) finished tied for 27th and 43rd respectively to round out the Bucs' individual participants.
CSU-Bakersfield's D.J. Fernando was the only individual to fire three consecutive under-par rounds for the individual medalist honors. He fired a five-under-par 67 in the opening round and finished the tournament with a three-round nine-under par 207 (67-69-71) score.
The Buccaneers will return to the links Monday, Apr. 3-4 at the Southeastern Intercollegiate Invitational for a 54-hole tournament hosted at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
