MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—One game after having their 49-game women’s soccer conference unbeaten streak snapped, the Barry Buccaneers started another one with a 3-1 win over the Saint Leo Lions at Buccaneer Field on Wednesday night.
Just 13:11 into the game, Damarys Mendez pushed a ball up the left sideline and found Emelie Karlsson just inside the 18-yard box. Karlsson beat Lion keeper Lauren Hudson to the near post.
Mendez and Karlsson hooked up with Tiina Saario for the eventual game-winner with less than three minutes to play in fist half. Karlsson fed the ball up to Mendez on the right wing and Mendez found Saario unmarked at 12 yards for the goal.
In the second half, the Lions put on a huge surge and dominated the first 20 minutes of the half. Crystal Rinaldi intercepted a goal kick from Barry’s Tiffany Rolfing and Jessica Huybrechts corralled the ball and turned with a one touch shot past keeper Kelly Tryson.
Barry’s Kalie Adkinson gave the Bucs an insurance goal in the 71st minute. Elanna Brady drove the ball across the left baseline and fed Adkinson for the blast to the upper corner.
The Bucs out-shot the Lions 15-3 in the first half, but the Lions recovered in the second half to close the gap to 25-11.
Tryson had four saves for the Buccaneers, including a spectacular saves on a rocket by Jennifer O’Connor that preserved a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute. Hudson made 12 saves for the Lions.
The Bucs host the Eckerd College Tritons on Friday at 7:00 pm in their next outing.
