Women’s Soccer Tops St. Edwards Hilltoppers

Published on: Sep 09, 2005

TAMPA, Fla. – Playing through the onslaught of occasional rain showers, the 17th-ranked Barry University women’s soccer team (4-0-1) topped the St. Edwards-Texas Hilltoppers (1-4-0) 3-0 earlier tonight at Peppin Field in the first game of the Spartan Invitational.

Early in the first half, neither team was able to net a goal despite the Hilltoppers doubling the Bucs’ scoring opportunities with eight shots and five corner kicks to Barry’s four shots. However in the final minutes before the break, Barry’s Ulla Matikainen (Jr., Helsinki, Finland) drove a pass from deep in the Buccaneer defense to Emelie Karlsson (Sr., Helsinki, Finland). She then eluded a defender and assisted on Tiina Saario’s (Sr., Helsinki, Finland) game-winner which led to Barry’s 1-0 lead at the half.

In the second half, both teams were evenly matched in their perspective scoring opportunities with five shots apiece. However, Barry capitalized on theirs scoring twice to give the Bucs a 3-0 win.

Tiffany Rolfing (Fr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) assisted on the first of the Bucs’ two goals serving the ball from the left-center midfield to Karlsson who scooted past the Hilltopper goalie Heather Koudelka for the goal and a 2-0 lead in the 85th minute. Just 1:20 later, Saario connected with Karlsson, returning the favor from the first half, assisting Karlsson’s second goal at 85:26 which lifted the Bucs to the 3-0 win.

The two goals for Karlsson tie her with former Barry All-American Jenny Nilsson for the school and Sunshine State Conference career records with 61 goals.  With five goals and two assists on the season, she already holds both the school and conference career records with 164 points (Jenny Nilsson - 158 points).

Barry’s Kelly Tryson (Fr., St. Louis, Mo.) collected three saves in the win and improved her season record to 3-0-1. St. Edwards’ Alexis Adams took the loss for the Hilltoppers and recorded one save, while Koudelka allowed two goals and picked up one save.

The Buccaneers will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 11 in their final game of the Spartan Invitational at 11:00 am.
