Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Knights In SSC Opener

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The #16 ranked Barry University (7-1-1, 1-0 SSC) Buccaneers, knocked off the Nova Southeastern University women’s soccer team (3-4, 0-1 SSC)  4-0 on Wednesday evening at Buccaneer Field as both team opened Sunshine State Conference play.

A converted penalty kick by 2004 SSC Player of the Year Tiina Saario in the closing minutes of the first half proved to be the difference as the Buccaneers won their Sunshine State Conference opener.  The Knights held the potent Barry attack in check until Kalie Adkinson was fouled in the penalty area in the 41st minute by Brandi Garcia.  Saario stepped to the line and buried the PK into the upper left corner before the teams went into the intermission.

Barry struck again early in the second half, just 0:37 second in, as midfielder Elanna Brady received a cross from striker Emelie Karlsson and one-timed the ball past NSU keeper Nicole Paquette.

Barry added two more insurance goals as Karlsson buried a cross from Brady in the 53rd minute and Saario scored her second goal of the match, and 6th tally of the year, in the 66th minute after Paquette was called for handling a back pass at the top of the six yard box. Daniela Tjeder tapped the ball over to Saario who blasted the shot over the wall.

The win was the Bucs’ 48th straight SSC match without a loss, dating back to 1998.

The Bucs out-shot the Knights 14-8 in the match, while each side had five corner kicks.

The Bucs travel to Rollins on Saturday with kickoff slated for 4:30 pm.
