ST. LEO, Fla. – Samara de Freitas (So., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) collected a career-high 23 kills to lead the Barry University women’s volleyball team (14-8, 7-2 SSC) to a 3-1 win over the Saint Leo Lions (9-14, 4-5 SSC) earlier tonight in Sunshine State Conference action at the Marion Bowman Center. The Buccaneers won 23-30, 30-23, 30-15, 32-30.
The Buccaneers faltered in the first game defensively, allowing the Lions to hit a blistering .455 team percentage, as Saint Leo grabbed the first set 30-23. However, the Buccaneers rebounded offensively in the second set and hit .382 as a team while collected 16 kills in route to a 30-23 win.
With the match tied at one game apiece, the Buccaneers dominated game three hitting .333 as a team to Saint Leo’s .075 for the 30-15. Both teams battled ferociously in game four, but de Freitas erupted with 10 kills on 13 attempts to give Barry the needed edge as the Buccaneers won 32-30.
De Freitas hit a blistering .636 clip to record the 23 kills, leading the Bucs. Kelly Dantas (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) added 15 kills on a .382 attack percentage, while Jentry Redinger (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) added her sixth double-double with 13 kills and 19 digs. Michele Rosamiglia (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) dished out 57 assists guiding the Bucs to a .273 team attack percentage. Spenser Rigg (Fr., Honolulu, Hawai’i) collected 16 digs and Stephanie Navarro (So., Miami, Fla.) added a career-best 10 digs.
Audrey Starkebaum led Saint Leo with 13 kills and a .265 attack percentage, while Kristin Mondientz and Emily Frey added 11 kills each. Jessica Lynn added 44 assists, while Nikki Prack and Eniko Lukacs collected 19 and 11 digs respectively.
The Buccaneers will return to action in Ft. Myers, Fla. looking to avenge an earlier season loss to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles on Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 pm.
