LAKELAND, Fla. – The 25th-ranked Barry University volleyball team (10-8, 5-2 SSC) dropped a key Sunshine State Conference match to the 12th-ranked Florida Southern Moccasins (19-2, 6-1 SSC) 3-0 earlier tonight at Jenkins Fieldhouse. The Buccaneers lost all three sets 30-20, 30-26, 30-27.
Barry’s Samara de Freitas (So., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) led the Bucs with 12 kills, while Spenser Rigg (Fr., Honolulu, Hawai’i) and Jentry Redinger (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) collected 12 and 10 digs respectively. Setter Michele Rosamiglia (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) dished out 32 assists.
Beverly Stasis led Florida Southern with 14 kills and Danielle Durham picked up her seventh double-double of the season with 11 kills, 13 digs and hit .435 for the match. Daryl Baby added 11 digs, while Jordan McAfee spread out a match-high 45 assists.
In the first game, Florida Southern’s Danielle Durham hit a blistering .833 clip and collected five kills to lead the Mocs past the Bucs 30-20. After registering a negative hitting percentage in game one, de Freitas hit .444 with five kills and Jentry Redinger (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) hit .333 with four kills to lead the team, but the Mocs managed to pulled out the win 30-26. In the final game, the lead exchanged possession six times before Florida Southern finally pulled away with the win 30-27 and took the match 3-0.
Florida Southern’s win was the first over the Buccaneers since Nov. 11, 2000. The Mocs defeated Barry 3-2 at the Health & Sports Center.
The Buccaneers hope to rebound in another conference match-up with the Rollins Tars on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 4 pm.
