Volleyball Avenges Loss To Vikings

Published on: Aug 28, 2005

Kelly Dantas had a match-high 17 kills as the Bucs avenged their loss to Western Washington

COCONUT CREEK, Fla.—The Barry volleyball team (2-2) avenged yesterday’s loss to Western Washington with a 30-17, 22-30, 30-22, 30-16 win over the Vikings in the Buccaneer Invitational on Sunday.

The Bucs roared out of the gate, with a 30-17 win in game one. Michele Rosamiglia directed the Bucs to a .500 attack percentage by spreading the attack among all the Bucs’ hitters. Jentry Redinger had five kills, while Kelly Dantas had four.

The Vikings came back in game two to out-hit the Buccaneers .292 to .093, led by seven kills in 12 swings by freshman middle Marissa Hill. The Vikings pounded out 20 kills in the frame to even the match.

But the last two games belonged all to the Bucs. The Vikings were undone in game three by 12 attack errors, leading to a -.053 hitting percentage. In game four, Barry went back to their diversified offense, hitting .300 for the game and putting down 17 kills. Dantas led the attack with six kills in 10 swings, while Samara de Freitas added five.

Dantas posted a match-high 17 kills and a .419 attack percentage. Redinger added 13 kills and 15 digs, while de Freitas had 12 kills. Rosamiglia passed out 44 assists and added 13 digs. Spenser Rigg led the team with 19 digs.

Hill was the only Viking with double figure kills at 15. The setting tandem of Kristen Urdahl and Katie Robinson had 23 and 21 assist respectively. Libero Courtney Schneider had 27 digs.

In the final match, the Bucs had a 2-1 lead, but dropped the final two games to fall 3-2 to Dowling, 24-30, 39-37, 21-30, 30-28, 15-9.

Game one appeared to be a carry over from yesterday’s 3-0 win, as the Bucs pounded out 24 kills, eight from de Freitas and six from Dantas, and hit .452 as a team.

But in game two, the Golden Lions staved off a game point at 29-28 and went on to claim a 39-37 win. Marta Slodnik had 10 kills.

The Bucs pounded out another .452 attack percentage to bounce back with a game three win 30-21 behind another hitting display by de Freitas, with six kills, and Castera, with five.

The Lions jumped all over the Bucs in game four, rushing out to a 19-9 lead and held on 30-28 to even the match and force the deciding game.

In game five, it was more of the same, as Dowling posted a big early lead, 10-4, and then coasted to the 15-0 win.

Castera had her best match of the season with 20 kills and a .350 attack percentage. Redinger had another double-double with 13 kills and 20 digs, while Rosamiglia set a career-high with 69 assists.

Slodnik led five Lions in double figures with 26 kills, while Irina Belazerova added 16.

The Bucs travel next weekend to the Premier Classic in Denver, Colo., hosted by Regis and Metro State.
