Volleyball Downs Lady Buffs in Premier Classic Opener

DENVER, Colo. – Returning to the Colorado Premier Classic for the first time since 2002, the Barry University volleyball team (3-2) defeated the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs (3-2) earlier today at Metro State. The Buccaneers won all three games 30-27, 30-24 and 30-20.
 
Michele Rosamiglia (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) got the first game off on the right foot serving the first three points to give Barry an early lead. The Bucs went on to win 30-27 to carry a one game lead into the second set.
 
In game two, the Lady Buffs started the set strong and took an early 9-3 lead. The Buccaneers tried to battle back, but West Texas A&M continued to battle and took another six point lead 21-15. Head coach Dave Nichols then took a strategic timeout which later tuned into a 8-0 run for the Bucs to take a 22-21 lead. Nicole Caster (Jr., San Juan, Puerto Rico) picked up two solo blocks and three kills in the set to help lead the comeback as Barry won 30-24.
 
In the final game, the Bucs dominated from the opening serve for a 30-20 win in the set and the match.
 
As a team, the Bucs posted 12 blocks to the Lady Buffs’ four and a .233 attack percentage to .040.
 
Samara de Freitas (So., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) led the Buccaneer charge with 14 kills, a .500 attack percentage and seven blocks. Rosamiglia dished out 40 assists and 12 digs, while Lauren Evans added 10 digs.
 
The Lady Buffs were paced by Jessica Scherr with 13 kills and a .294 hitting percentage, while Brittani Bell picked up a match-high 17 digs.
 
The Buccaneers will return to action later tonight at 7:30 pm taking on host Metro State.
