Volleyball Lands Sailfish

Published on: Sep 06, 2005

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – After struggling this past weekend at the Premier Classic in Denver Colo., the Barry University volleyball team (4-5) dusted off the cobwebs for their 2005 home opener and strolled to a 3-0 win over the visiting Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (4-2) earlier tonight at the Health & Sports Center. The Buccaneers won all three games 30-12, 30-17, 30-17.

In the first game, the Buccaneers jumped out fast with an 18-10 lead. Jentry Redinger (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) then served the next 10 points that led to the Bucs’ 30-12 win in the first set. In the second game, the Bucs barely held an 8-7 lead until Michele Rosamiglia (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) served a 6-0 scoring run that pulled Barry out in front for the win 30-17. The Bucs exploded in the third set leading 21-7, but the Sailfish battled back scoring seven unanswered points late to keep the match close. However, Barry went on to win by the same score, 30-17.

The Buccaneers hit a blistering .469 clip in game two and ended the match with a .391 team attack percentage. Pacing the Barry serving, Redinger reeled off six of the Bucs’ 10 team services aces in the match and also led the team with 15 points.

Samara de Freitas (So., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) hit a .625 clip, collected 11 kills and four blocks to lead the Bucs, while Nicole Castera (Jr., San Juan, Puerto Rico) added 10 kills and a .444 attack percentage. Rosamiglia directed the Buccaneer attack dishing out 33 assists and Spenser Rigg collected 11 digs to lead the team.

Brittany Erickson collected eight of Palm Beach Atlantics 17 kills to lead the team while Ashley Bonvento dished out 12 assists.

The Buccaneers have a 10-day layoff before hosting UPR-Rio Piedras on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7 pm at the Health & Sports Center.
