Volleyball Downs UPR-Rio Piedras in Four

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – After a 10-day layoff, the 18th-ranked Barry University volleyball team returned to the court and picked up a 3-1 win over the visiting Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras Gallitos earlier tonight at the Health & Sports Center. The Bucs won 30-21, 29-31, 30-23, 30-12.
 
Kelly Dantas (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) hit a .667 clip and collected five kills in the first set and led the Bucs to an easy 30-21 win. In the second set, the Gallitos took an early 14-10 lead, but Jentry Redinger (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) took control and served the Bucs next five points to give Barry a 15-14 lead. However, seven Buccaneer service errors resulted in a 31-29 loss.
 
Dantas, Redinger and Samara de Freitas (So., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) collected five kills apiece and led Barry to the 30-23 win. Finally, Redinger took the opening serve and set the tone for the final set serving the first six points of game four as the Bucs rolled to a 30-12 win.
 
Michele Rosamiglia (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) spread out the Buccaneer attack allowing four players to record double-digit kills and dished out 54 assists, while guiding the team to a .315 attack percentage. Dantas recorded 15 kills and hit a blistering .538 clip to lead all attackers, while de Freitas had14 kills and Redinger and Nicole Castera (Jr., San Juan, Puerto Rico) collected 13 kills each. Spenser Rigg (Fr., Honolulu, Hawai’i) collected a match-high 18 digs to lead the defense.
 
Maridelie Diaz collected 14 kills and nine digs to lead the Gallitos, while Alexandra Rosado Rivera added 10. Mariangelis Sanchez dished out 20 assists and Martha Quiles added 14 digs to lead the Gallitos in both categories.
 
The Buccaneers will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 in Melbourne, Fla. to open Sunshine State Conference play at 7 pm.
