MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University volleyball team (8-6, 3-1 SSC) got back on the winning track with a 3-0 win over the visiting Saint Leo Lions (5-9, 2-2 SSC) earlier today at the Health & Sports Center. Barry won all three sets 30-18, 30-27, 30-23.
Samara de Freitas (So., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) launched an impressive offensive attack in the first set and led the Bucs with seven kills and a .875 attack percentage. Michele Rosamiglia (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) guided the team to a blistering .500 team attack percentage and the 30-18 win.
The tide turned in game two for the Bucs offense. Barry collected 17 kills to the Lions 10, but added 12 attacking errors and a .098 team percentage. The Buccaneers still managed to come away with the 30-27 win. Holding a 2-0 advantage heading into game three, the Buccaneers managed to fight off the Lions 30-23 in the final set and the win, 3-0.
The Bucs were led by de Freitas with 13 kills, while Nicole Castera (Jr., San Juan, Puerto Rico) followed with 11. Rosamiglia dished out 34 assists and collected 10 digs, while Jentry Redinger (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) added a team-high 11 digs.
Saint Leo’s Erin Oberlin led the Lions with eight kills and Audrey Starkebaum followed with seven. Jessica Lynn added 24 assists for Saint Leo, while Nikki Prack collected a match-high 12 digs.
The Buccaneers will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 27 hosting the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles at 7 pm in a key south region match-up.
