MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The struggles continued for the defending national champion Barry University volleyball team (8-7) after dropping a 3-1 decision to the visiting Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (13-2) earlier tonight at the Health & Sports Center. The Buccaneers lost 30-24, 30-23, 21-30, 21-30.
After swiping two matches from the Eagles just a year ago, Florida Gulf Coast came back and took the first of two meetings this season. Brooke Youngquist hit a blistering .800 clip, collected four kills and six digs to lead the Eagles to a 30-24 in game one. She turned around in game two and posted five kills and a .625 percentage to lift Florida Gulf Coast to a 30-23 win.
Holding a 2-0 advantage heading into the third game, the Eagles slipped and the Buccaneers hit .588 as a team led by Samara de Freitas’ (So., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) eight kills and .636 attack percentage. Nicole Castera (Jr., San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Michelle Rycroft (So., Satellite Beach, Fla.) added six and five kills respectively to give Barry a 30-21 win. However, Barry managed just 11 kills as a team to the Eagles 20 in the fourth game and fell 30-21.
Just one kill short of her career high, de Freitas led the Bucs with 19 kills, while Castera and Rycroft added 17 and 13 respectively. Michele Rosamiglia (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) dished out 56 assists for the Bucs and Jentry Redinger (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) collected 13 digs to lead the team.
Five players managed to register double-digit kill numbers. Ericka Fonseca led the charge hitting a .556 clip and added 17 kills, while Devon Watts followed with 14 kills and a .429 attack percentage. Youngquist, Melissa Duffield and Heather Van Olst collected 12, 11 and 10 kills respectively. Ciara Sandoval led the Eagles with 36 assists and Youngquist collected a match-high 16 digs.
The Buccaneers and Florida Gulf Coast will face off again Oct. 21st in Ft. Myers, Fla. Barry will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 29 in Boca Raton, Fla. to face Sunshine State Conference foe Lynn at 7 pm.
