BOCA RATON, Fla. – The 20th-ranked Barry University volleyball team (9-7, 4-1 SSC) traveled to Boca Raton to take on the Lynn Fighting Knights (8-4, 3-1 SSC), who lived up to their nicknames, pushing the Buccaneers to the limit in a five-game thriller. The Buccaneers pulled away in the end for a 3-2 victory by the scores of 23-30, 30-24, 28-30, 30-21, and 15-9.

Barry junior Nicole Castera (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led the offense with 20 kills, and Samara de Freitas (So., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) added 16. Michelle Rosamiglia (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) paced the Buccaneers with 55 assists, while rookie Spenser Rigg (Fr., Honolulu, Hawai’i) recorded a personal-best and season-high 33 digs to lead the defense.

In game one, the Knights limited the Buccaneer offense to a .179 hitting percentage, taking the first game 30-23. Lynn began the game on a 10-4 run and built a ten-point lead over Bucs before Barry reorganized to chip away the lead. Behind the Castera’s five kills and Meisje-Sable Burton’s (Fr., Pheonix, Ariz.) two, the Bucs were able to narrow the lead by six points before the end of the game.

Following the game one loss, the Bucs came out in game two focused and went point-for-point with the Fighting Knights. Both sides exchanged leads several times throughout the set until the Bucs established a 16-13 margin. Barry held onto the lead and took the second game 30-24.  Castera and de Freitas collected six kills each to lead the Bucs

In game three, the Bucs did not maintain the momentum built up from the second game win and the Fighting Knights slipped away with a 30-28 victory.

In the fourth set, a more intense Buccaneer squad took the floor and built an early 15-11 lead and led by as many as 10 points. Barry suffocated the Lynn attack holding them to a mere .118 team attack percentage. The Bucs went on to win 30-21 to force the deciding game five.

In the final game of the match, the Bucs sealed the victory with a dominating 15-9 performance. The victory secured the 17th consecutive victory for Barry over Lynn. As a team, the Bucs hit .318 to Lynn’s .091.

The Buccaneers will be in action again Friday night hosting Nova Southeastern at the Health & Sports Center in Sunshine State Conference action at 7 pm.
