MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Melvin Triche (Sr., Syracuse, N.Y.) scored 17 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the Barry University men’s basketball team (2-0) to a 66-60 win over the visiting North Carolina Central Eagles (0-3) earlier tonight at the Health & Sports Center.
The first half featured strong defense as both teams combined scored only 47 points. Barry opened up with an early 5-1 lead, but the Eagles fought back for a 15-14 lead with 6:20 remaining. Felipe Barrios (Jr., Miami, Fla.) however scored eight first-half points to help lift to Bucs to a 27-20 lead at the break.
After the intermission, the Buccaneers opened play with a 9-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game 37-22 on a pair of Barrios free throws. Struggling with only two points to start the game, Triche erupted in the second half scoring 15 of his 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to fend off the Eagles.
The Eagles outscored the Bucs 40-39 in the second half, but Amadou Fall (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed 10 points to the Bucs winning efforts in the same half. Barry also shot 39 percent from three-point range.
Triche led the Buccaneer scoring with 17 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, while Barrios contributed 15 points and 13 boards. Fall added 14 points and four blocked shots. Drew Johnson led the Eagles with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while DeAngelo Sprulli added 12 points.
The Buccaneers will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 26 taking on Palm Beach Atlantic at 7 pm.
