Championship Diary

Junior Johanna Soderstrom (left) is making her second appearance at the national championship as an individual. She will be recording her thoughts on the tournament and the attendant activities for you here each day so check back to keep up with what is going on with the Bucs as she competes for the national title.

Houston; May 16, 2008

Finally, I am back in Miami again. We were able to get on an earlier flight and it feels good to be back home again. I played ok today until the last three holes. I missed a short birdie putt on 16, a double bogey on 17, and a bogey on 18 to finish with a 78 and T15 overall in the tournament.

This was my second appearance in the National tournament and it has been another great experience for me. Even though I did not play as good as I hoped, I learned something new every day out there and I know that experiences like this help me grow as a player.

This was a great finish to my season. I am leaving Miami to go back home to Sweden on Tuesday. It will be nice to come home to friends and family and to recharge my batteries for my final year with the Bucs. I really look forward to welcome our new players for next semester. As I said before, we will have a strong team with two maybe three freshmen that will help put us over the top as a team.

I would like to thank all of you how have been out there cheering for me these days and also thanks everyone who have been following me online during this past week. Furthermore, I would like to give credit to our sport information staff, Keith and Dennis, for the media coverage including pictures, written information, and this blog.

Lastly, COACH I really appreciate everything you have done for me, not only in this tournament, but from my very first day at Barry. You have helped me to become a better player both mentally and physically, and I know that you always believed in my abilities. The "believe stone" I got from you has been in my pocket in every tournament since I received it. I remember you saying two days ago " I believe, You believe, and that is why we are here playing for the national title".

I hope you all enjoyed this blog. Hopefully, you will hear from the whole team next year when it’s time for the 2009 Division II National Championships.

Houston; May 15, 2008
Today, we left the hotel at 10:20 am and had breakfast at the golf course. Due to thunder and lightning, play was suspended at 11 am for 30 minutes. I teed off a little later than expected at 12:30. The round was very slow and it took us five hours to play.

I am disappointed with today’s round. I shot 78 and made some stupid mistakes. I know I have it in me to do so much better. I just have to go out there tomorrow and play offensively. I have nothing to lose now and can only improve. I was the first group to finish my round, so at this time I do not know how many strokes I am behind the leader. Tomorrow it will be an early tee time for me again.

Tomorrow is the last day for the tournament. Coach and I will fly back to Fort Lauderdale later in the afternoon. One more round for me and then the season will be over. I am going to do my best to finish this great year with a good round tomorrow.

This season has been my best season at Barry so far. I have been playing good golf and I have been very successful in school with a 4.0 GPA this semester. I have one more year at Barry and I hope that next season will be just as good or even better. I know that I will not be here as an individual next year, rather we will all be here as a team and fight together. I miss you Anna, Kix, Isa, and Remi.

I am excited for tomorrow. It is time to play some really good golf!

Houston; May 14, 2008

I teed off at 7:28 am today. I started off good and was one-under after 10 holes. Unfortunately, I hit three bogeys coming in on 11, 14 and 15 and finished with a 74. I am currently six strokes behind the leader. I just need to stay patient. It is two more rounds to go and a lot can still happen.

It has been three early mornings in a row now, but tomorrow we will be able to sleep in. My tee time is at 12:18 pm.

I have to tell you about the opening of the Spring Sports Festival last night. All athletes and coaches had dinner at the Downtown Aquarium. We enjoyed delicious food and spent time inside the aquarium exhibit. We saw beautiful constructed environments for the rainforest, the Louisiana swamp, and the White Tigers of the Maharajah’s Temple.

Outside the exhibit it was like a mini carnival. Coach and I went on the shark voyage which is like a train ride through the center of the shark tank filled with a variety of shark species swimming around. We had a great time and took many pictures J.

Tonight all coaches and athletes are having dinner together with our Athletic Director, Mike Covone.
I am really enjoying my stay here in Houston and having a great time!

Today, it was an interesting day at the Memorial Park golf course. I didn’t hit the ball very well today but my short game really saved me. I shot 76 (+4) and I am glad I managed hang in there, even though I didn’t hit the ball like I wanted. The weather has been alright…not sunny, but still warm.

I am not used to have coach to myself an entire round. It is great. Normally, I see her every par three in a regular tournament, but here she walked with me all 18 holes. It is always better to have two heads when it comes to yardage and reading putts. Whenever I was unsure of the break she helped me with the read. Bridget Lyons, our Associate Athletic Director, came out and watched me play the last nine holes. Great support : )

I practiced for a while on the range after my round to find the right feeling again. It feels good, and I am excited for tomorrow. We haven't seen the tee times for tomorrow, but I will probably tee off early in the morning like I did today, which I do not mind at all. It is nice to be done early.

Now I have time to relax for a while. At 5 pm we have the NGCA (National Golf Coaches Association) Award Ceremony, and after that coach and I are going to the Opening Ceremony of the Springs Sports Festival from 6:30-9 pm at the Aquarium near the hotel.

That was it for today. I will be back tomorrow with more exciting news.

Houston; May 12, 2008

I left Miami early this morning to participate in my second Division II National Championship in Houston. My experience so far has been great. I had my practice round today and the course is in good shape. I am really excited to be here and have the opportunity to play in another National Championship. This is the moment I have been waiting for since the beginning of the school year.

Coach and I arrived in Houston around 8 am this morning. The golf course is located in Memorial Park, approximately 45 minutes from the airport. While driving to the golfcouse, coach and I were talking about our experience in Michigan two years ago when I played my first National Championship in terrible wind, rain, and 25 degrees. We said that the weather conditions can't be worse this time. We both enjoy the Texas sun and today the weather conditions were great.

Tomorrow is the first round of the Championship. It will be an early morning for me teeing off at 7.30 am from hole number 10. I must say that I do miss the rest of the team. I know that next year we will all be here together to fight for the winning trophy.

Again, I am very excited about the upcomming four days. I am sure this will be one of the best expereinces for me so far. There will be live scoring after every three holes on golfstat.com. I will write more tomorrow to keep you all updated on how I am doing.

Have a Good Night, Johanna
