PENSACOLA, Fla.—Tori Fish scored less than half a minute from the end of the game to lift the #2 West Florida Argonauts over the Barry Buccaneers 3-2 in the final of the ArgoFanShop.com Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the UWF Soccer Complex.
"While we are frustrated by the result, there are a lot of positive things to take from this game and the whole weekend," head coach Fred Jungemann said afterward. "Seven goals and two comebacks against two Top-20 teams is a great way to start the season. The girls are getting better every day and we are very happy about where we are and the progress we are making."
Emma Karp continued her stellar play, scoring twice in the second period to knot the game at 2-2. In the 63rd minute, she swiped the ball away from the Argonauts’ defense and ripped a shot from 27 yards out to pull the Bucs (1-1-0) to within one. In the 74th minute, Haley Struthers served a perfect free kick over the heads of the UWF defense and found Karp running unmarked behind.
The Argonauts struck twice in the first half. In the 19th minute, Rachel Cutts sent a corner into the box and Jodi-Ann Robinson slipped through the Bucs’ defense to slot the ball home. Shakira Duncan, the 2009 National Player of the Year, struck in the 27th minute when the Bucs were unable to clear a ball out of the six-yard box.
Emily Brunnschweiler (1-1-0) kept the Bucs in the game with five saves, while Alex Ryan (2-0-0) had two saves for the Argos.
The Bucs return home to face the Florida Memorial Lions on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 7:00 pm.
