Teixeira Earns SSC Volleyball Player Of The Year

WINTER PARK, Fla.—A total of 22 student-athletes have been named to the 2010 All-Sunshine State Conference Volleyball Team. Three Buccaneer athletes made the list including Julia Teixeira who earned First Team All-SSC and was selected as the 2010 Player of the Year. In addition to Teixeira, senior Ady Alcantara earned a second team nod and Lanie muys earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team.
 
A senior outside hitter from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Teixeira averaged 4.65 kills, 2.46 digs, 0.43 service aces, and 0.29 blocks per set. She led the SSC in kills and points per set (5.26). She also ranked second in service aces. Her .277 attack percentage was 10th in the league. Teixeira posted seven double-double performances this season and tallied at least 20 kills in eight matches. She was twice named SSC Offensive Player of the Week, and on Sept. 28, she was recognized as the AVCA Division II National Player of the Week.
 
Teixeira becomes the ninth Buccaneer to earn Player of the Year honors. Most recently, Fernanda Brino earned the award back-to-back in 2003 and 2004.
 
Alcantara, a senior right side hitter from Sao Paulo, Brazil,earned second team selection after averaging 3.40 kills per set, the second most on the team behind Teixeira. Alcantara was third on the team and seventh in the SSC in aces per set (0.32) and second on the team and third in the SSC with 4.02 points per set.
 
In her first year out of Orland Park, Ill., Muys made an immediate impact for the Bucs. She started all 22 matches at middle hitter and was third on the team with 167 kills and fourth with 2.04 kills per set. Muys finished the season with 50 total blocks to chip in on defense as well. Muys is the 11th Buccaneer volleyball player, and the third in four years, to earn a spot on the All-Freshman team.

The Bucs wrapped up the regular season with a 16-6 overall record and an 11-5 mark in the SSC. Though the Bucs had the same conference record as Florida Southern and Lynn, they finished the regular season second overall in the SSC with a .727 winning percentage.
 
With a 15-5 regional mark, the Bucs earned the #5 seed in the NCAA DII South Regional Tournament and play #4 Lynn tonight at 5:00 pm. Buccaneer fans can listen to action live at GameCentral and can watch the game live by visiting the University of Tampa Athletic's Site.
 
Voting for the all-conference volleyball team was conducted among the league's volleyball coaches and sports information directors.
