Men's Golf Captures Fourth-Straight Buccaneer Invitational
The Barry University Men's Golf Team won their fourth-straight Buccaneer Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.
MIAMI BEACH, Fla.—The South Florida rain held off long enough as the ninth-ranked Barry University men’s golf team won the 2011 Buccaneer Invitational Presented by Carrabba’s Italian Grill. The Bucs, who led after the second round, posted a two-over 854 (285-274-295) to take the win.
 
The fourth-ranked West Florida Argonauts made a late charge in the third round, but were unable to catch the Bucs and finished second with an eight-over 860 (283-283-294).
 
Following West Florida, #20 Nova Southeastern finished third, two strokes behind West Florida, with an 862 (279-291-292).Third-ranked Lynn University (291-285-290) and #21 Central Missouri (283-296-287) rounded out the top-five; the Knights and Mules tied for fourth place, each firing a +14 866.
 
Nova Southeastern’s Jack Bartlett was the individual winner for the tournament. Bartlett fired a two-under 211 (67-75-69). West Florida’s Ryan Black finished a stroke off of Bartlett in second with a one-under 212 (67-72-73). Barry’s Chris Carlin finished third with an even 213 (72-66-75).
 
Four players tied for fourth place to round out the top five spots. Otto Bonning (71-69-74) of West Florida, Jose Joia (69-70-75) of Lynn, Central Missouri’s Joe Midgal (71-73-70), and Barry’s Daniel Stapff (72-65-77) each finished with a one-over 214.
 
Stapff’s second-round 65 tied the Barry University record for lowest round and was a stroke shy of the tournament record for lowest round set by Lynn’s Patricio Salem in 2008.
 
For the remaining Buccaneers, Guillermo Pumarol posted a 215 (68-72-75) to finish tied for eighth. Marcus Segerstrom fired a 217 (73-72-72) to finish tied for 14th place, and Marcelo Huarte shot a 218 (74-71-73) to finish tied for 22nd.
 
This is the fourth time in a row that the Buccaneers have won their own tournament. In 2008, the Bucs took the win at Westview Country Club. The last three years, including this year, the Bucs have taken the win at the Normandy Shores Golf Course.

MEN'S GOLF IN FIRST AFTER TWO ROUNDS AT THE BUCCANEER INVITATIONAL
 
MIAMI BEACH, Fla.—The first two rounds of the 2011 Buccaneer Invitational presented by Carrabba’s Italian Grill are in the books. Barry University, the host and ninth-ranked school in the country, moved up three spots from the second round to finish the day in first place of 14 teams with a nine-under 559 (285-274).

The Bucs were led by Daniel Stapff who fired a 137 (72-65) to finish in first place on the day. Stapff’s second-round 65 tied a school record for the lowest round in history.

Following the Bucs, fourth-ranked West Florida is in second with a two-under 566 (283-283). Nova Southeastern, ranked 20th, finished the day in third with a+2 570 (279-291). Laval (289-287) and third-ranked Lynn (291-285) rounded out the top five in on the first day. Both teams posted a 576 to tie for fourth place.

Barry’s Chris Carlin posted the second best score of the day. Carlin fired a 138 (72-66), a stroke off Stapff, for second place. Ryan Black (67-72) of West Florida and Jose Joia (69-70) of Lynn finished tied for third, each with a 139. Barry’s Guillermo Pumarol (68-72) and West Florida’s Otto Bonning (71-69) rounded out the top-five individuals. Pumarol and Bonning tied for fifth with a 140.

For the remaining Buccaneers, Marcus Segerstrom (73-72) and Marcelo Huarte (74-71) each posted a 145 to tie for 19th place.
