Counseling Department Receives Two International Awards

Chi Sigma Iota, the international Counseling Honor Society’s Headquarters, is proud to announce that Barry University's Beta Upsilon Chapter is the recipient of two prestigious awards. The first, a Chi Sigma Iota International Award for Outstanding Chapter of the Year, was awarded to Beta Upsilon, Barry's Counseling Department’s chapter of Chi Sigma Iota. This award is given to recognize the international chapter for its activities promoting the counseling profession and the professional development of counseling students and new counseling professionals.

The second award went to Ms. Taylor Burrowes, a doctoral student in Barry's Counseling Program, who is being awarded a Chi Sigma Iota International Fellowship Award. Among numerous other accomplishments, Burrowes did outreach in Grand Cayman after Hurricane Ivan and served as a Red Cross mental health counselor volunteer for two weeks in Louisiana after hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

These awards are given to outstanding members and the outstanding chapter for international recognition among the other 47,253 members and 272 chapters located all over the world as of December 31, 2005. The award winners will be formally recognized internationally at the annual American Counseling Association World Conference, which will be held in Montreal, Quebec on April 1, 2006. The support and dedication of the Counseling faculty has encouraged members to uphold the commitment, professionalism and service ideals fostered by the Chi Sigma Iota International Counseling Honors Society. The Beta Upsilon Chapter is especially indebted to the Beta Upsilon Chapter officers for their continual support, encouragement, and personal assistance with the Chapter. They are: Dr. Scott Gillig, faculty advisor; Dr. Maureen Duffy, counseling department chair; Sister Evelyn Piche, dean of the Adrian Dominican School of Education; and Dr. Jack Dezek, associate dean.
