Barry Tops Spring Points In Director's Cup

CLEVELAND—For the second year in a row, the Barry Buccaneers are the kings (and queens) of spring in the Learfield Sports Director’s cup.

Barry finished 34th in the overall competition, but was first in the spring season thanks to outstanding campaigns by the men’s and women’s golf and tennis teams. Men’s golf and women’s tennis both captured the NCAA Division II National Championship, while women’s golf finished second and men’s tennis was tied for third.

The Bucs posted 373 points in the spring (100 each for men’s golf and women’s tennis, 90 for women’s golf and 83 for men’s tennis), to top runner up Armstrong Atlantic’s 361.5 points.

Barry added 25 points in the fall from women’s soccer and 25 in the winter from men’s basketball, for a total of 423 points for the year. In the 18 years of the Director’s Cup program, the Bucs have finished in the top 20 percent of NCAA Division II 16 times. Since 2009-10, they have ranked in the top five schools in spring season points all five years.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women’s and seven men’s.
