SIOUX FALLS -- Barry University baseball standout, Jordan Wellander signed with the Sioux Falls Pheasants of the American Association on Tuesday. The American Association is an Independent professional baseball league in the Midwest.

The right-hander from Headland, Alabama is the latest Buccaneer to sign a professional contract after completing his career with Barry this past spring.

Wellander spent this summer playing for the U.S. Military All-Stars in the Red White and Blue Tour where they played numerous professional and collegiate teams, traveling around the country.

“I was a little skeptical at first then I thought about it and it was an opportunity that I couldn't pass up. It was a great honor and a tremendous experience to play with active and retired soldiers,” said Wellander.

After the tour ran to a close, Wellander then joined the St. Joseph Mustangs in Missouri and helped them advance to the NBC World Series in Wichita, Kansas where they placed 5th.

Soon after, Wellander signed with the Sioux Falls Pheasants and wasted little time in making his professional debut. Tuesday night, Wellander made a relief appearance for the Pheasants and tossed a scoreless ninth retiring the side in order.

“I feel blessed for the opportunity that has been given to me. I plan on working hard in order to achieve my next goal of signing with a MLB ballclub in the future,” said Wellander.

For Buccaneers head coach, Marc Pavao, Wellander’s signing is evidence of the program and culture that has been built at Barry.

“Jordan is someone that is very hungry to continue playing. He's going to open some eyes, especially in the role that he is in. He is a great representative of our program and institution. We wish him the best,” said Pavao.
