Barry Women's Tennis Earns ITA All-Academic Team

SKILLMAN, N.J. -- Barry University women's tennis team earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team and five Buccaneers received Scholar All-American honors Friday.

The Buccaneers, who won the NCAA Division II National Championship, had a 3.35 grade point average for the 2013-14 academic year. ITA All-Academic Team honors are given to teams with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or better for all players who dotted the roster at any point during the academic year.

Five Buccaneers players earned Scholar All-American honors, including senior Akemi Maehama, junior Linda Fritschken, sophomore Karina Goia and freshmen Ana Pain and Maria Medeiros. Individuals must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 or better and be enrolled at the institution for at least two semesters.

Maehama had a 4.0 while completing her undergraduate teaching internship. Fritschken also had a 4.0 in broadcast journalism.
