April 23, 2012
Caroline Wendling led the Bucs to their third straight Sunshine State Conference title as they whipped through the tournament in Lakeland, Fla., this week. Wendling went 2-0 in singles, winning 6-1, 6-0 at #5 against Elissa DeCampli of Rollins in the semifinals and beating Roxane Alexandru of Lynn 6-0, 6-3 at #6 in the championship match. She also combined with partner Linda Fritschken to go 3-0 in doubles. She is just the third player in school history to reach 70 singles wins for her career (Greta Trotman 73, Valeria Papandrea 71).
Fabian Groetsch, who also went 3-0 in doubles on the week, clinched the Bucs' Sunshine State Conference title with a 6-2, 7-6 (2) win over 18th-ranked Vlad Cirla at #2 singles on Saturday. Groetsch, ranked 27th, avenged a regular season loss to Cirla and led the Bucs to their ninth conference championship.
