Women's Golf Wins Tusculum/Kiawah Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Barry University women's golf team won the Tusculum/Kiawah Women's Intercollegiate by four strokes Sunday.

The No. 2-ranked Buccaneers captured the spring's initial tournament with a two-round total of 297-300 -- 597 on Cougar Point Golf Club's 5,800-yard, par-72 course. Florida Tech was second after shooting 301-300 -- 601. West Florida finished third at 608, Armstrong Atlantic fourth at 613, Savannah College Art & Design fifth with a 621 in the 18-team, 90-player field.

It was Barry's third tournament title of the 2013-14 season.

Four Bucs finished in the top 10, including Nicky Ferre, who shot a 3-over 71-76 -- 147 to tie for third with Ashlii Thompson of UNC-Pembroke and Lily Dorling Kent of . SCAD's Sofia Molinaro beat Florida Tech's Johanna Larsson in a playoff after the co-leaders each shot 1-over 145.

Molinaro's second round 5-under 67 tied the tournament low round. It is the fourth time in the event's 12-year history a playoff was required to crown the individual medalist -- all of those playoffs coming in the past five years.

Barry's Maria Paola Fiorio tied for sixth with Florida Tech's Felicia Leftinger, following a 75-74-149. Barry's Francesca Perini and Nancy Vergara tied for ninth at 8-over 152. Perini followed up a 79 Saturday with a par 72 in the closing round. Vergara shot 75-77. Buccaneers teammate Daniela Murray shot 76-79 -- 155 to finish 23rd.

The Bucs will compete in the Lady Moc Golf Classic hosted by Florida Southern at The Club at Eaglebrooke Feb. 17-18.
