Dr. Darlene Kluka
Dean of the School of Human Performance and Leisure Sciences
Darlene A. Kluka, Ph. D., D Phil, has been recognized as an international scholar and leader in the fields of sport science, women in sports by several national and international organizations. Her professional career spans 38 years, of which she has dedicated her energy and enthusiasm to the advancement of women and sport science. In addition to earning Master of Arts and Bachelor of Arts degrees from Illinois State, she has earned two doctorates, one in motor learning from Texas Woman’s University, the other in sport management from the University of Pretoria, South Africa.
Kluka is presently full professor and Interim Dean of the School of Human Performance and Leisure Sciences at Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. She is also an Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria in the Department of Biokinetics, Sport and Leisure Sciences. She is currently a charter member of USA Volleyball Sports Medicine and Performance Commission and is the editor for the International Journal of Volleyball Research.
She has presented with the ICHPERSD (International Council for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport and Dance) Biennial Scholar Award; the International Relations Council of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance International Scholar Award; AAHPERD Southern District Scholar Award; LAHPERD Scholar Award; the International Academy of Sports Vision Research Award; and is an Honorary Research Fellow at Hong Kong Baptist University Research Center. She has also achieved Research Fellow status in the International Academy of Sports Vision and in the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). She has been inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame for her contributions to volleyball coach education, and has also been inducted into the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) Hall of Fame. She earned the prestigious USA Volleyball Leader in Volleyball Award from USA Volleyball. She was named the 2008 Distinguished Alumna of Texas Woman’s University.
She is a former Vice President of USA Volleyball and served on its board of directors for eight years. She has also served as a member of the United States Olympics Committee from 1996-2000. Kluka has also been a leader in the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICCSSPE), serving as treasurer, editorial board chair, and as a member of the executive board and President’s Committee. She has also served as President and AAHPERD Board of Governors Representative for the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS). Recently, she has completed a four-year presidency with the International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women (IAPESGW).
