ST. LEO, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers dropped their Sunshine State Conference softball opener to the Saint Leo Lions 7-1 at University Stadium on Friday night.

The Bucs (11-6, 0-1 SSC) jumped out on top in the first inning. Megan Copeland singled and stole second and came around on an RBI triple from Sarah Broeseker. But that would be all the offense they could muster and the Lions (14-6, 1-0 SSC) answered with seven runs.

For the Bucs, Copeland had three hits and Broseker added two. For the Lions, Kelsey LaNeave went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Tori Weindorf added two RBI.

Megan Still (7-1), who took the loss in both Buccaneers wins last season, scattered eight hits and stuck out six to earn the win. Alexis Yohe (4-3) took the loss for the Bucs, allowing four runs on five hits in three innings.

The series concludes on Saturday with a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
