AUSTIN, Texas -- Three Barry University men's golfers shot under par in the first two rounds of the St. Edward's Invitational Monday, and the No. 1-ranked Buccaneers are within four strokes of co-leaders No. 2 Nova Southeastern and No. 5 Abilene Christian.
Freshman Adam Svensson is tied for fifth at 3-under 141, senior Marcus Segerstrom is a stroke back, tied for seventh, and junior Scott Smyers tied for ninth at 1-under 143. Smyers fired a 3-under 69, catapulted by an eagle, in the second round. Segerstrom had 13 birdies, and Svensson 11 through the first two rounds.
The Buccaneers shot 4-over 293-287 -- 580 on the 6,909-yard Grey Rock Golf Club. Nova shot 294-282 -- 576, and Abilene Christian 282-294--576 as both co-leaders finished the first day at even par. Barton College is third, one stroke behind the leaders at 1-over 577, while Cal State-Monterey Bay is tied with the Bucs at 4-over.
Barry and Barton College each made a tournament-leading 42 birdies. Nova had 39 and Abilene Christian 37.
Colorado-Colorado Springs' Kevin Witte shot 67-69 -- 136 to find a spot atop the individual leaderboard with a one-stroke lead at 8-under. Abilene Christian's Alex Carpenter and Barton's Nicolas Fonseca are tied for second at 7-under 137. Barton's Daniel Claytor is a stroke ahead of Svensson and Incarnate Word's Austin Jordan.
Barry juniors Marcelo Huarte is tied for 52nd, following his 77-78 -- 155, and Jaime Rodriguez is tied for 71st at 163.
Final round play begins Tuesday morning.
