No. 2 Men's Tennis Sweeps No. 5 Hawai'i Pacific

AUSTIN, Texas -- Barry University No. 2-ranked men's tennis team swept No. 5 Hawai'i Pacific, 9-0, Friday at St. Edward's University. It is the Bucs' fifth sweep this season.

The win was the Buccaneers' 10th over a ranked opponent this season, and improved Barry's overall mark to a school-record 18-0 to begin the season. Hawai'i Pacific fell to 14-3.

Barry's No. 2-ranked doubles team of Marco Mokrzycki and Fabian Groetsch beat No. 10 Petr Michnev and Gerald Moretti, 8-4, at the top flight. Mokrzycki and Groetsch improved to 11-2 this season with a 3-1 record against ranked doubles teams.

Max Wimmer and Ollie Lemaitre defeated Yann Renault and Adriano Locorotondo, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles. The Bucs duo are 2-2 this year.

Romain Costamagna and Leo Vivas cruised to an 8-3 No. 3 doubles win over Jaume Martinez-Vich and Max Hertl. That improved the Buccaneer duo's mark to 5-1 together.

Lemaitre breezed to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Locorotondo at No. 6 singles to improve to 6-0 this season. Vivas beat Renault, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 5 to bump his record to 11-1.

Ranked No. 22, Wimmer beat Moretti, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3 singles to move into a tie for fourth place on the school's career victory leader's list with 62. He is five shy of tying Bucs assistant coach Thomas Hipp's record of 67.

Groetsch, ranked No. 19, defeated twelfth-ranked Martinez-Vich, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2 to clinch the team victory for the Bucs. He is 9-4 this year.

Romain Costamagna outlasted Hertl, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, at No. 4 to improve to 12-1. It was his third three-set victory of the season.

Ranked fourth in the country, Mokrzycki continued his dynamite play with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over second-ranked Michnev at the No. 1 spot. Mokrzycki is 10-2 overall and 7-2 aginst nationally-ranked opponents.

"The whole team played well," Hipp said.

Barry meets No. 13 Grand Canyon at 10 a.m. CST Saturday before finishing the Texas trip with Sunday's 9 a.m. match against No. 25 St. Edward's.
