ST. LEO, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers fell 59-54 to the Saint Leo Lions in the Bowman Center on Saturday.
The Bucs (10-10, 2-7 SSC) jumped out to a quick lead and were out in front 11-5 after Kaylia Richardson’s layup with 14:46 left in the first. But the Lions (7-12, 2-7 SSC) turned up the heat and went on a 17-3 run over the next seven minutes to go up 23-14 on a three-pointer by Mary Redmond. Saint Leo carried a 33-27 lead into the break.
Trailing by as many as 10 points in the second half, the Bucs trimmed the lead to just one point, 47-46 at the 6:01 mark on a layup by Amra Elezovic. After the Lions went up 56-51, Ashley Lutz cut the lead to two points with a three-pointer at the 0:37 second mark. Jakia Grimsley responded with a bucket to push the lead back to 58-54 and, out of a time out, the Bucs turned the ball over and had to foul. The Lions hit only one of four from the stripe, missing the front end of two consecutive one-and-ones, but grabbed the rebound each time to get another chance.
Richardson, Elezovic and Antonia Neibler each pumped in 11 points to lead the Bucs. Richardson also had a game-high 13 rebounds. Nyjah Porcher scored six points, but had 11 rebounds and eight assists. Kinnara Lewis led Saint Leo with 21 points, while Melissa Jackson added 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Bucs return home for a meeting with Florida Southern on Feb. 4 at 5:30 pm in the Health & Sports Center.
