Women's Golf 6th After 1st Round of South Regional

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Barry University women's golf team is in sixth place after shooting 312 in the first round of the NCAA South/Southeast Regional at Lone Palm Golf Club.

Nova Southeastern leads the nine-team, three-day tournament that runs through Tuesday, following its opening-round 298. Host Florida Southern is second, two strokes behind the Sharks. Armstrong Atlantic shot 301, and is third. Lynn is fourth at 305, and Rollins fifth, three strokes ahead of the Buccaneers.

Bucs freshman Nicky Ferre shot 4-over 76 on the 6,149-yard course, and found herself in a four-way tie for 10th on the individual leaderboard. Ferre had three birdies in Sunday's first round, two of which came on par-5 holes.

Barry sophomore Nancy Vergara shot 77, and is in a 10-way tie for 14th. Senior Taylor Babcock shot 78, and is tied for 24th.  Vergara had three straight birdies on the back nine, sinking putts on the par-5 11th, par-4 12th and par-3 13th in succession. Babcock birdied the par-4 10th and No. 11.

Sophomore Daniela Murray and freshman Maria Paola Fiorio are tied for 35th after each shot 81. Murray birdied No. 11.

Armstrong's Kristen Sammarco shot a 2-under 70 to take a one-stroke lead over Nova's Linnea Johansson. Florida Southern's Megan Kiley and Nova's Daniela Ortiz both shot 73, and are tied for third. Four players are tied for fifth after shooting 74.
