Three Women's Tennis Bucs Playing for Varner Finals

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Three Barry University women's tennis players will play for singles titles at the Varner Invitational hosted by Rollins College.

Barry University's Elisabeth Abanda advanced to Sunday's Varner Invitational Flight A singles final after beating Lynn's Ioana Ivan, 6-2, 3-6, 10-8, in the semifinals Saturday.

Abanda will meet Bethune-Cookman's Mina Matsuba in Sunday's final.

Barry's Kimmy Twelker also advanced to the finals in Flight B with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Cookman's Chinatsu Kajiwara in the semifinals. Twelker will play Lynn's Andrea Berkova in Sunday's final.

In the Flight C semifinals, Barry's Isabela Miro defeated Rollins' Carli Davis, 6-2, 6-1, to advance to Sunday's final, where she will meet Lynn's Kim Przeslowski.

Barry's Karina Goia will play for the Flight A Consolation title after beating Nova Southeastern's Alex Johansson. Goia meets Flagler's Kelly Stewart in the consolation championship.

In doubles play, Abanda and Twelker will square off against Miro and Goia in an all-Barry Flight A pairs final. Abanda and Twelker were 8-4 winners over Kajiwara and Maria Sablina of Bethune-Cookman in the semifinals. Miro and Goia defeated Cookman's Gaby Chinchilla and Matsuba, 8-2, in the semifinals.

In the Flight B doubles quarterfinals, Barry's team of Akemi Maehama and Jasi Witherspoon lost to Rollins' Angie Crowley and Emma Wookey, 8-4.

Witherspoon was an default winner over Bethune-Cookman's Valentina Beresiarte in the Flight C consolation before losing to Florida Tech's Chloe Chanley, 7-5, 6-1.

At Clemson's Duckworth Family Classic, Barry University women's tennis player Emma Onila defeated Winthrop's Allie Garcia, 6-1, 6-2, in the Flight 1 singles semifinals. She advances to Sunday's finals.

Barry's Linda Fritschken lost to Virginia Commonwealth's Yukako Noi, 6-2, 6-1, in the Flight 2 semifinals.

In the consolation semifinals, Barry's Cristina Valladares was a 2-6, 6-1, 10-6 winner over Troy's Lyubov Dorofeeva. Barry's Maria Eduarda Reis beat Roberta Oliveira of Georgia Regents University, 6-2, 6-0, in the Flight 3 consolation semfinals.
