MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Barry University men's golf team will host its annual Buccaneer Golf Day Friday at Normandy Shores Golf Club in Miami Beach. It begins with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
Normandy Shores, which served as home to golf legends Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer and Peter Thompson on a regular basis, is a par 71, 6,805-yard course.
Interested participants and donors should contact two-time NCAA Champion coach Jimmy Stobs at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 305-899-3061. All players will be lumped into a group with one of the current reigning NCAA Champion Bucs players or coaches. Barry's women's players also are scheduled to play in the event this year.
Barry will receive its NCAA Division II National Championship ring Thursday in a ceremony to begin at 4 p.m. in the university athletic center's Landon Atrium. Both Barry men's golf and men's tennis teams will receive their title-winning rings, as will women's golfer Nancy Vergara, who won the individual national championship in a memorable spring for Buccaneer athletics.
Barry men's golf won the 2013 NCAA Division II National Championship in thrilling fashion last May, marking the program's second title in school history, both under Stobs, who was named the 2007 National Coach of the Year. The Bucs beat defending champ Nova Southeastern in the semifinals and Lynn in the finals, both by 3-2 match play scores to win last season's title.
At last year's Buccaneer Golf Day, Barry celebrated its five-year NCAA Championship team reunion as members of the 2007 squad returned.
This year, Buccaneer golf supporters need not look far to find a champion to play with as three of the five starters who helped Barry capture last year's title are back. Seven players who competed in tournaments for the No. 1-ranked Bucs are also still on this year's roster.
The 2013-14 academic year marks the 30th year in Barry University athletics.
