MIAMI—The Barry women’s basketball team completed their spring service project on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the Miami Rescue Mission.
The team and coaches helped with food preparation and then served over 100 lunches to the homeless.
“Part of Barry University’s mission is to serve others and it was rewarding to see our student-athletes with smiles on their faces as they served lunch to people who are in need,” head coach Bill Sullivan said. “I was very impressed as I witnessed our team’s positive attitude as they prepared food and served meals to the homeless. Too often we overlook the fact that there are people in our community who are really struggling just to make it through another day. I believe we all left the Miami Rescue Mission with a greater sense of compassion for those in need in our community.”
After their shift, Sullivan and sophomore center Emily Schahczinski were interviewed for the radio show "Life Changers" on LIFEFM 90.9 FM. Junior guard Jackie Perez was also interviewed for the Spanish-language version of the show, which airs on Sunday, Jan. 12th, at 8:30 am on RADIO LUZ 1360 AM.
“My experience at Miami Rescue Mission was quite humbling,” Perez said. “It helped me experience and realize, first hand, that we as a team are truly blessed. These experiences allowed us to help those less fortunate in our community and make a rewarding impact in someone’s life.”
