MIAMI LAKES, Fla. – Barry University’s softball team swept a pair of games from cross-town foe St. Thomas Saturday afternoon taking game one, 4-3 before winning the nightcap, 2-0.
Game One
Barry (9-2) jumped out in front in the first inning when Camille Czarnecki belted a two-run double to grab the early lead.
St. Thomas (3-4) answered in the bottom half of the frame with a pair of runs, capitalizing on the wild pitch that allowed Jessica Matias to score. Cristina Sacramento added an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.
The Bobcats struck once again in the bottom of the second when Carson Catasus scored on a defensive miscue to take a 3-2 lead.
In the third, the Bucs were able to tie the game at three. Kayla Ogle got things started with a walk. After stealing second and setting herself up in scoring position, Ogle scored on Hunter Mars’ RBI single to tie the game 3-3.
With the game tied in the sixth inning, Cheyanne Head singled and stole second to spark another scoring opportunity for the Bucs. Ashley Fernandez followed with a single to put runners on the corners, setting up the stage for Kristina Pazienza who drove in Head with a sacrifice fly. Alexis Kent added some insurance with an RBI single to plate Fernandez and the Bucs cruised to the win.
Taylor Sabol (2-2) picked up the win for the Bucs after tossing six innings in relief, in which she scattered four hits and allowed one unearned run while striking out two.
Catasus was tagged with the loss for the Bobcats after surrendering two runs on three hits in two innings of work.
Game Two
In the nightcap the Bucs were limited offensively to just four hits and a pair of runs, but that is all that was necessary for Brittany Pugh and company.
Mars and Copeland led-off the top of the fourth with back-to-back doubles to spark the Buccaneers’ rally. Mars would eventually score on a wild-pitch and Pugh helped her own cause, driving in Copeland for the game’s second run.
Although St. Thomas out-hit the Bucs, 7-4, Pugh was able to scatter all seven hits without allowing a run and finished the complete-game shutout with five K’s.
Sacramento (2-1) took the loss for the Bobcats, allowing two runs in four innings in relief of Catasus.
The Bucs return to action on Wednesday when they battle Palm Beach Atlantic in a double-header that is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
