WINTER PARK, Fla. – Barry University’s softball team dropped a 7-2 contest against the Tars of Rollins College Saturday night at Martin Luther King park.

Taylor Sabol (6-5) got the start for the Bucs (18-9, 3-4 SSC) and worked efficiently through the first 1.2 innings. However, after retiring the first two batters she faced in the second, Sabol struggled to close the inning and Rollins (22-8, 7-3 SSC) loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a four-pitch walk. Hailee Keisling drove in the Tars’ first run with an infield single, and Courtney Dublin capped the two-out rally with a bases-clearing triple to right-center, giving Rollins a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Rollins loaded the bases and threatened once again. With just one out Hilary Brown drove a fly-ball to right field. Kelsey Oonk attempted to tag up from third base, but Hunter Mars had other ideas. The freshman delivered a spot-on throw at the plate and Alexis Kent applied the tag to complete the inning-ending double-play and escape the jam.

Megan Copeland led off the top of the fourth with a double to center field. Mars, attempting to sacrifice, reached on a throwing error that allowed Copeland to score for the Bucs’ first run.

After a walk and a pop-out, Lexi Correnti drove in the Bucs’ second run on a sacrifice fly.

The Tars answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth and then added two more in the sixth, capitalizing on a Buccaneers’ defensive miscue, to extend the lead to 7-2.

Sabol tossed six innings and allowed seven runs, just five earned, while striking out four batters, but the Bucs were not able to mount a comeback despite getting the leadoff hitter on base in five of the seven innings.

Niki Fogle (14-4) picked up the win throwing a complete game while allowing just two runs, neither earned, and finished with two K’s.

The two teams are scheduled to play a double-header on Sunday with game one set to begin at 1 p.m.
