On the night of September 17th, Barry Men’s Soccer won a thrilling game against rival Florida Tech, 3-2. However, this comeback win took longer than anyone expected.
Florida Tech struck first as midfielder Jack Willison scored from outside the box in the 12th minute. The Bucs were under heavy pressure for the next few minutes but after just 23 minutes of play, the game was postponed for an hour due to some unpleasant weather.
Coming back from the long delay, the Bucs pressured Florida Tech in search of an equalizer but couldn’t find the net when the clock struck for halftime.
However after the game’s second break, Barry was quick to answer back as midfield Nico Gerke scored his third goal of the year on a header off a Ryan King free kick in the 54th minute.
The Bucs would once again have to come back to tie the game after Florida Tech’s Carlos Brito scored an unassisted goal in the 67th minute.
That answer once again came in the form of Nico Gerke, who scored his second goal of the game and fourth of the year off a Esteban Ochoa cross in the 72nd minute.
After 90 minutes of play, the score was knotted at two apiece. Two overtime periods were looming, with a “golden goal” winning it all for the scoring team.
That golden goal came just two minutes into the first overtime period as forward Esteban Ochoa scored his first goal of the year into the far post after receiving a 25 yard pass from midfielder Frank Lustig.
This was the Bucs’ first overtime win of the year and their first comeback victory as well.
Next up for Barry is a road trip up to Lakeland, Florida to face old foe, Florida Southern on September 20th at 7:00 pm.
