MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University junior catcher Luis Arrizurieta was picked up by the Gastonia Grizzlies of the Coastal Plain League Wednesday.

The CPL is a 14-team collegiate summer league based in the Carolinas and Virginia, featuring top players from around the country.

Arrizurieta, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., will report to the team Sunday before making his first road trip with the club. Gastonia plays the Asheboro Copperheads in North Carolina at 7:05 p.m. Monday.

"I kind of look at it as a spring training for my senior year," Arrizurieta said. "I'm pretty excited to experience a new part of the country in a noted league."

Last year, Arrizurieta was an All-Star in the Valley League, while playing with the Front Row Cardinals. He was initially scheduled to play for a club in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, but the team migrated to another league.

"Luis will make that team better," Bucs coach Marc Pavao said. "He handles pitchers well. He'll give them confidence to throw breaking balls because he's a great defensive catcher. He'll certainly control the running game.

"It's just another great opportunity for him to see great competition to see another level and help his overall baseball ability."
