MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers shook off the rust from a 13-day layoff to beat the Johnson & Wales Wildcats 70-55 in women’s basketball action in the Health & Sports Center on Friday.

The Bucs (6-1), who had not played since Dec. 1, jumped out to a big lead, gave most of it away and then pulled away at the end to get back in the win column.

Barry led 12-1 after the first three minutes and maintained an 8-13 point lead for most of the rest of the period. But Dominique Dixon and Stephanie Ball combined to hit three treys in the last 1:32 to stretch the lead to 36-16 at the break. Alesha Jenkins, making her first start of the year, pumped in 11 points to lead the way.

In the second half, the Wildcats (3-10) slowly chipped into the lead, pulling to within four points, 48-44, on a jumper by Shikina McMillan with 8:18 to play. But the Bucs pushed the lead back to double figures over the next four minutes, out-scoring the ‘Cats 12-4, as Dixon capped the run with another trey.

Colette Eule led all players with 22 points. Dixon chipped in 17, while Jenkins had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Myia Russell led the Wildcats with 19 points, while Quamisha Spence added 17 and McMillan had 10.

The Bucs take on the 4-3 Lady Panthers of Drury in the Cruzin Classic, hosted by Nova Southeastern, on Monday, Dec. 17 at 4:00 pm.
