MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Barry assistant coach Maria Lopez gushed over her team's effort. Finally, they have doubles dynamics.
"I haven't seen our doubles teams play that well in a long time," Lopez said. "Our girls were working so well together. They were coming together after every point. It was great."
A good start indeed for the No. 5-ranked Buccaneers in a 9-0 victory at No. 18 Florida Tech Saturday to open the season. Barry used three new players in a lineup that featured a major facelift. But they all delivered.
Freshman Elisabeth Abanda knocked off No. 4-ranked Kristina Huba, 6-2, 2-6, 10-5 at No. 1 singles in her first collegiate match. She and fellow freshman Emma Onila paired to beat Huba and Stephanie Dohner, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles.
Barry's 18th-ranked doubles team of Linda Fritschken and Isabelo Miro rang up an 8-2 win over Abbey Keister and Chloe Chanley at No. 2 pairs. Akemi Maehama and Karina Goia defeated Jessica Widmark and Charlotte Fahnehjelm, 8-0, at No. 3.
Fritschken, ranked 19th in the nation in singles, rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Dohner at the No. 2 spot. Onila collected her first collegiate singles victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Chanley at No. 3. Maehama breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Fahnehjelm at No. 4.
Miro, a transfer from Oklahoma State who played during the fall season with the Bucs, beat Keister, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5. Goia won her first college match, defeating Katie Close, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6.
