Softball Closes Season With Sweep of Tritons

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry softball team closed out the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of the Eckerd Tritons at Buccaneer Field on Saturday, winning 10-2 in six innings and 2-0 in the finale.

In the first game, Britney Pugh (7-5) pitched a complete game and belted a walk-off home run in the sixth to lead the Bucs to victory.

Pugh had a shutout going until the fifth inning as Barry (32-18, 19-5 SSC) built an 8-0 lead. The Bucs scored four in the first. The Bucs loaded the bases with no outs. Julie Brito drew a walk to force in Natalia Ojeda. Kelly Martinez singled off the pitcher Lindsay Rohrbach (6-9) to drive in Megan Copeland. Sarah Broeseker scored on a ground out by Pugh and Brito came home on a sacrifice fly by Alexis Kent.

In the fourth, Ashley Fernandez belted a leadoff homer. Ojeda and Copeland followed with singles. Broeseker drove in two with a double into right field. After a wild pitch, Brito lifted a sacrifice fly to bring Broeseker home.

In the fifth, the Tritons (19-37, 4-20 SSC) finally broke through against Pugh. Chelsea Jeffares singled with one out and stole second. Kara Oberer knocked her in with a single and Kaycie Duncan followed with an RBI single to plate Oberer.

But Pugh had the last word. With pinch runner Kate Hehre at second, Pugh lifted an 0-1 pitch from Nazley Wilson over the wall in left to end the game.

Copeland led the Bucs with three hits and scored twice. Ojeda, Broeseker, Martinez and Pugh each had a pair of hits. Pugh drove in three, while Brito had two RBI. Pugh held the Tritons to five hits and four walks in six innings. She struck out five. Rohrbach took the loss for the Tritons. She allowed eight runs on 11 hits in 3.1 innings. Wilson gave up two runs on two hits in two innings.

In the finale, Alexis Yohe carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, before settling for a two-hit shutout. She struck out seven without issuing a walk.

Brito knocked in both runs for the Bucs. She had an RBI double in the first to scored Ojeda. In the third, she had an infield single that scored Fernandez.

Whitney Bernier (9-21) took the loss for the Tritons. She gave up two runs (one earned) on seven hits and a walk in six innings.
