HERSHEY, Pa. -- Barry University men's golf team beat Missouri-St. Louis, 4-1, in the NCAA Championships match play quarterfinals Thursday, sending the No. 2-ranked Buccaneers on to the semifinals.
Barry meets No. 1 Nova Southeastern in Thursday afternoon's semifinals on the par-71, 6,984-yard Hershey Country Club course.
Barry's Scott Smyers beat Missouri-St. Louis' Chase Smith by eight strokes in his head-to-head quarterfinal matchup. Smyers shot par, recording three birdies and an eagle to win his match handily.
Barry's Jared Dalga outshot Colby Yates by seven strokes to win his match. Dalga had a 2-over 73, sinking a birdie on the first hole.
Missouri St. Louis' David Abolt survived a stern challenge from Barry's Marcus Segerstrom, winning by two strokes in the most competitive match of the quarterfinals. Segerstrom had three birdies, including one on the 448-yard No. 3 hole that Abolt matched. Abolt had five birdies. Segerstrom shot 1-over 72, and Abolt a 1-under 70.
Barry's Adam Svensson defeated Joe Atkisson by seven strokes. Svensson shot 2-under 69, making four birdies. He had a birdie on the par-3, 168-yard 16th when Atkisson got into trouble, settling for a triple bogey.
Barry's Simon Forsslund won the last match of the day, beating Warren Crow by six strokes. Forsslund shot a 2-over 73, sinking a birdie putt on the 199-yard second hole. Forsslund made par on the 420-yard, par-4 ninth, picking up two strokes when Crow double-bogeyed.
