MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University women’s tennis team beat Emory, 7-1, Friday to improve to 17-1 this season.
The Buccaneers, ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II, handed the Eagles, ranked No. 3 in Division III, their second loss of the season in 14 matches. It was Barry’s second win in as many days. It sets up Saturday’s 10 a.m. showdown with No. 4 Hawai’i Pacific (12-2) at Buccaneer Tennis Center.
Barry’s No. 1 singles player, 19th-ranked Karina Goia, rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Gabrielle Clark to improve to 13-0. Eighth-ranked Emma Onila returned to the Buccaneers lineup for the first time in 11 days, beating Beatrice Rosen, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 2. Ranked No. 31, Barry junior Linda Fritschken defeated Michelle Satterfield, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3 to pick up her 13th win of the season.
Bucs senior Cristina Valladares beat Madison Gordon, 6-1, 6-2, after getting bumped up two spots to No. 4. Fellow senior Akemi Maehama was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Brenna Kelly at No. 6 to give Barry five singles wins.
At No. 5 singles, Barry freshman Blanka Szavay was up a set on Emory’s Katarina Su, winning the opener, 7-6 (7-2), before falling behind 3-1 in the second set when she stopped, leaving the match unfinished.
Emory won the top doubles flight as Clark and Goodman beat Ana Pain and Kimmy Twelker, 8-5. Fritschken and Szavay beat Satterfield and Kelly, 8-3, at No. 2. Elisabeth Abanda and Goia, the No. 13-ranked duo in Division II, beat Gordon and Su, 8-2, at No. 3.
