Men's Tennis Drops Drury in Late-Night Match

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Barry University's men's tennis team needed to play deep into the night, but finally the Buccaneers did what they set out to do in beating No. 10 Drury, 5-0, Wednesday in the NCAA Division II Championships Round of 16 at Sanlando Park.

The No. 3 Buccaneers (24-2) move on to play No. 4 Concordia (18-3) in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Thursday. Drury's season came to an end at 23-3.

After waiting roughly seven hours to play what was initially a 4 p.m. scheduled match, Barry swept doubles play in a match that ended after midnight. The Bucs' No. 3 team of Kevin Sielmann and Renato Lombardi picked up the first win, beating Sergio Manzanas and Jakub Sipos, 8-4. No. 2-ranked Ollie Lemaitre and Ahmed Triki were 8-2 winners over Andy Blair and Jorge Nadal at No. 1. Leo Vivas and Romain Costamagna completed the sweep with an 8-4 victory over Max Hepp and Lukas Kriem at No. 2.

In singles play, Barry's 12th-ranked Fabian Groetsch rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win over the 36th-ranked Blair at No. 1 singles to give the Bucs a 4-0 lead. Nico Dreer polished off the Bucs victory with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Sipos at the No. 3 spot.

Barry's Romain Costamagna was leading 6-5 in his No. 2 singles match with Hepp. Lombardi had a 6-4, 3-0 lead on Kriem at No. 4. Sielmann won a first-set tiebreaker over Manzanas, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 5. Franco Echenique had a 6-4, 3-0 lead on E. Christian Isben at No. 6 before the match ended.
