Men's Golf Tied for 5th at NCAA Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Barry University men’s golf team is tied for fifth after the second round of the NCAA Division II Championships at The Meadows Golf Course.

The No. 1-ranked Buccaneers shot 305 Tuesday on the par-71, 7034-yard course, which has caused problems for the 20-team, 108-player field on the back nine. Nova Southeastern has a seven-stroke lead on second place Chico State. Cal State Monterey Bay is third at 592. The Bucs’ 597 two-day total is 15 strokes behind Nova. Lynn is also tied for fifth at 597. Central Missouri is fourth, three strokes ahead of Barry and Lynn.

Bucs sophomore Adam Svensson shot 75 Tuesday behind two birdies, and is 12th at 4-over 146. Junior Berry Jole shot 76 in the second round, which included two birdies and an eagle. He is tied for 13th at 147. Senior Scott Smyers had four birdies in his middle round 76. Senior Jared Dalga, who hails from nearby Grand Rapids, had one birdie in his 78. Freshman Mario Beltran had three birdies on his way to 78.

None of the golfers in the tournament are under par entering Wednesday’s final round of stroke play. The top eight teams after the completion of the 54-hole stroke play tournament advance to match play Thursday. A champion will be crowned on Friday.

Nova’s Santiago Gomez is the leader at even par 142. Western New Mexico’s Harry Wetton is a stroke behind. Chico’s Alistair Docherty, Lynn’s Keith Greene and Monterey Bay’s Anton Rosen are tied for third at 144.
