Barry Volleyball Picked Seventh in SSC Poll

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Barry University’s volleyball team was picked to finish seventh in the Sunshine State Conference preseason poll released Wednesday.

The Buccaneers received 21 points in the poll voted on by league coaches. Tampa was chosen to repeat as league champs, collecting 64 points and receiving eight first-place votes. SSC schools were not allowed to vote for themselves.

Florida Southern, which is predicted second, received the other first-place vote.

Barry went 11-17, 4-12 in the conference last season. The Buccaneers return 10 players who suited up on last year’s youth-oriented squad. Five newcomers join this year’s group, which opens the season Friday, Sept. 5 at 12:45 p.m. versus Barton at Palm Beach Atlantic’s Hyatt Place Classic in West Palm Beach.

The Bucs’ home opener is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19 against Eckerd. Barry hosts Rollins the following day at 4 p.m. and PBA, on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. to complete a three-match home stretch in five days. The Sailfish, a three-year provisional SSC member as of July 1, will become full league members in 2017-18.

Barry hosts Tampa Saturday Oct. 11 at 4 p.m. in the Health & Sports Center.
