MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The third-ranked Barry Buccaneers stayed unbeaten on Sunday night with a 2-1 win over the Lee Flames at Buccaneer Field in the home opener.
After giving away a goal early to the Flames (0-2-0), the Bucs (2-0-0) battled back to score twice in the last 22 minutes. Nicole Blanchard put Lee on top in the fourth minute with a 38-yard blast from the left wing on an assist from Alison Braun.
The goal stood up until the 68th minute. After the Flames were called for a foul just outside the box, junior Tamara Vuckovich knocked in the free kick to knot the game at 1-1. For Vuckovich, who had three direct kick goals last year, it was her first goal of the season.
In the 83rd minute, Ashley Harlan pushed the ball up out of the back, then sent it over to Jojo Frigerio out on the left wing. Frigerio crossed it into Shanice Robe whose shot was stopped by Flames keeper Marbel Egwuenu, but not controlled, and Harlan, who never stopped running, slid in to poke the rebound in for the game winner.
The Bucs held a narrow 15-12 edge in shots, 6-5 on goal. Becca Rogers had three saves for the Bucs, while sophomore Katie Turner turned away a point-blank shot from Blanchard in the 76th minute to preserve what was at the time a 1-1 tie. Egwuenu also had three saves, while freshman Meagan Newman had a team save on a long shot by Ashley Harlan with Egwuenu well off her line in the 88th minute.
The Bucs travel up to Melbourne, Fla., on Sunday, Sept. 14 to face the North Georgia College Nighthawks at 11:00 am at Rick Stottler Field at Florida Tech.
