TAMPA – Barry’s No. 2-ranked women’s tennis team blanked No. 14 Tampa, 9-0, on the road Sunday.

The Buccaneers improved to 20-0 overall, 7-0 in the Sunshine State Conference. Barry will close the regular season with two matches at home this week, beginning with Wednesday’s 3 p.m. tilt with No. 8 Lynn. The Bucs finish the regular season against NAIA No. 19 St. Thomas 10 a.m. Saturday.

Barry altered its doubles lineup, moving Linda Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker into the top flight, where the Bucs pair got by No. 25-ranked Lauren Hewett and Meg Wladimirski, 8-5. Barry’s 11th-ranked duo of Elisabeth Abanda and Emma Onila held on for an 8-6 No. 2 doubles win over Kelsey Matthews and Lindsay Nochowicz. Karina Goia and Isabela Miro rolled to an 8-1 victory over Thasia Garcia and Chloe Pereira at No. 3.

Onila, ranked No. 41 in the country, had little resistance in a 6-1, 6-2 No. 1 singles victory over Garcia,  who is ranked 40th. Rankned 28th, Abanda got back on the winning track with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Wladimirski at No. 2. Fritschken, who owns the No. 33 ranking, defeated Hewett, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3.

Twelker moved up to No. 4, where she beat Nochowitz, 6-3, 6-2. Akemi Maehama was an easy 6-0, 6-1 winner over Matthews at No. 5. Miro had her way with Pereira, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 6.

Maehama improved to a team-best 17-1 with her singles victory. Onila is 16-2, and Fritschken 13-1. Fritschken and Twelker are 17-1 in doubles play. Goia and Miro are 12-1, and Abanda and Onila 15-3.

The Buccaneers improved to 12-0 against nationally-ranked opponents this season.
