Bucs Women's Golf 3rd After Day 1

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Barry University women’s golf team is in third place after the first round of the NCAA Division II National Championships at LPGA International Legends Course Wednesday.

The Buccaneers shot 302, and are 10 strokes behind leader Nova Southeastern and a stroke behind second-place Lynn. St. Edward’s is fourth at 304, and Grand Canyon fifth, five strokes behind the Hilltoppers.

Barry’s Nancy Vergara shot a 1-under 71, sinking three birdie putts in the opening round of the four-day tournament on the 6,228-yard course. She birdied the par-5 eighth hole, par-3 15th and par-4 18th, and is four strokes behind leader Daniela Ortiz of Nova, who had seven birdies.

Lander’s Teresa Hernani is third after shooting par, while three others are a stroke back.

Barry’s Nicky Ferre is sandwiched in a nine-way tie for 16th after shooting 76. Ferre birdied the par-4 first and 13th holes.  Teammate Maria Paola Fiorio shot 77, anchored around birdies on Nos. 8 and the par-3 15th. She is in a seven-way tie for 25th.

Daniela Murray shot 78, and is tied for 32nd. Murray birdied the par-3 12th, which dropped her to 2-over at the time. Taylor Babcock shot 80. She birdied the par-5 second.
