DADE CITY, Fla. -- Barry University sophomores Maria Paola Fiorio and Nicky Ferre each shot 72 in the first round of the Saint Leo Invitational Monday to help anchor the Buccaneers to the top of the team leaderboard.
Fiorio and Ferre are tied for second with Lynn's Jessica Bradley, a stroke behind Flagler's Marie Santacroce on the individual leaderboard. Barry's Nancy Vergara and Lynn's Estefania Buritica are tied for fifth at 1-over 73 on the 6,132-yard Lake Jovita Golf Club course.
Barry shot 296 as a team to take a two-stroke lead over Flagler and four-stroke advantage over Florida Tech into Tuesday's final round of the 18-team, 96-player field. Lynn is six strokes behind the Buccaneers at 14-over 302, and Florida Southern is fifth at 307.
Bucs freshman Martina Bertuccioli shot 79, and is tied for 33rd. Francesca Perini is tied for 41st after carding back-to-back 40s for an 8-over 80.
The Buccaneers will be paired with Flagler and Florida Tech, beginning at 9:39 a.m. in the final round.
