AUSTIN, Texas -- Barry University's No. 1-ranked men's golf team shot 296 in the opening round of the St. Edward's Invitational Monday.
The Buccaneers are tied with Cal State Monterey Bay in a tournament likely to be shortened to 36 holes due to weather. The forecast for Tuesday is expecting freezing rain in the early morning. The tournament, slowed by poor weather Monday, is through 13 holes of the second round, but tournament officials are planning to crown a champion after the second round.
The Buccaneers are unofficially at 13-under through completed holes in the second round. Monterey Bay is even in the second round,
Western New Mexico is third after one round, following a 300 on the par-72, 6,858-yard Grey Rock Golf Club in the 16-team, 84-player field.
Barry sophomore Adam Svensson is the leader in the clubhouse after shooting 3-under 69 in the opening round. He had five birdies and two bogeys in the first round. He had five birdies in a bogey-free front nine in the unfinished second round. Svensson, the No. 1-ranked player in the country, had a two-stroke lead over Monterey Bay's Carr Vernon, Brandon Hortt and Western New Mexico's Calum Hill after one round.
Bucs junior Berry Jole shot 74, and was tied for eighth after one round. He birdied three holes in the first round. Senior Scott Smyers shot 76 to find himself in a tie for 19th. Freshman Mario Beltran shot 77 in the opening round. Senior Jared Dalga shot 82.
Colorado School of Mines' Nick Berry and Cal State Stanislaus' Anthony Manguray shot 73.
